Heavy Rain Triggers Ongoing Flood Risk Across Channel Islands
Jersey’s government reported that 20 to 30mm (0.8 to 1.2 inches) of rainfall was expected during the day, with multiple areas already experiencing floods. In Guernsey, traffic and highway officials noted that several roads were impacted, prompting emergency closures on La Route des Capelles, Route des Coutanchez, and Verte Rue in St Sampson.
Forecasters warned that rainfall on Wednesday could be "heavy and persistent," with an additional 10mm (0.4 inches) possible overnight. Jersey’s Infrastructure & Environment (I&E) department urged caution while traveling due to standing water and advised residents to check for blocked drains on their properties. "Teams from I&E are working to clear debris and make the roads safe," the department added.
In Guernsey, the government confirmed that road closures in St Sampson would remain in effect "until further notice." A social media update explained: "La Route des Capelles, Verte Rue and Route des Coutanchez in St Sampson has been closed between Grow Limited and The Guernsey Institute Coutanchez Campus due to flooding following heavy rain."
Jersey Police reported that a section of Trinity Hill near Oak Tree Gardens had lifted due to the weather. "The Parish of St Helier has been notified and will be attending to assess. Please take care whilst travelling along this section of road," a spokesperson said.
Additionally, mist and fog have disrupted travel, with the local airport warning that some flights may face delays.
