Trump's NBA Finals Visit Prompts Massive NYC Security Lockdown
The presidential presence triggered a hard lockdown of several blocks surrounding Madison Square Garden in midtown Manhattan, forcing the cancellation of a planned watch party at the venue itself. In response, Mayor Zohran Mamdani — himself attending the game — arranged an alternative free watch party at nearby Bryant Park, opening its doors to as many as 5,000 fans.
The New York Police Department designated the cordoned-off area around the Garden a formal "secure area," barring both pedestrians and vehicles from wide stretches of the surrounding streets. Access to the zone was restricted to ticketed attendees only, funnelled through five designated checkpoints jointly managed by police and the Secret Service. Videos circulating on social media depicted dense, sprawling queues of fans waiting to pass through.
The security spectacle drew an unexpected rebuke from Ann Coulter, the conservative commentator and one-time close ally of the president, who blasted Trump's decision to attend as an act of self-indulgence.
"20,000 attendees will be MASSIVELY inconvenienced for all the extra security, the Knicks Watch Party at Garden Is canceled, thousands of extra law enforcement officers will be required (paid for by taxpayers), traffic will be a disaster -- all so he can sit in the Garden rather than watch the game on TV," she said on the US social media platform X.
She followed with a pointed addendum: "Presidents ought to be willing to sacrifice once in awhile," she added.
Adding another dimension to the security picture, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) — the joint US-Canadian military organisation — disclosed that more than 10 airspace violations had been recorded in restricted zones above New York and New Jersey over just the preceding three days.
On the court, the New York Knicks carry a commanding 2-0 series lead into Monday's contest as the San Antonio Spurs fight to stay alive in the best-of-seven series. Trump was expected to depart for Washington, D.C. immediately following the game — marking the first visit by a sitting US president to an NBA Finals game.
