Lula instructs Trump to spend less time on social media

(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for spending excessive time on social media instead of focusing on governing. In an interview with the news outlet g1 on Wednesday, Lula remarked that a leader of a nation as powerful as the United States should be more cautious with his words and more dedicated to diplomacy, multilateralism, and promoting peace rather than chasing headlines online.

Lula’s comments follow reports that Trump has published over 2,100 posts on his Truth Social platform since returning to the presidency on January 20—averaging 17 posts per day, according to The Independent. His activity intensified during the recent 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran, where he frequently posted updates and warnings to both sides.

“In this turbulent world, the U.S. president should be leading, not just tweeting,” Lula said, adding that governance requires more attention than internet presence.

Trump, in an earlier interview with The Atlantic, described his posting style as rapid and mostly self-managed, saying, “I go quickly as hell... and I like doing them myself.”

White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers defended Trump’s online activity, describing him as “the most transparent president in history,” who uses social media to speak directly to the American people about key policies and announcements.

Lula, who has repeatedly clashed with Trump—especially given the former U.S. president’s ties with Brazil’s ex-leader Jair Bolsonaro—has made several sharp remarks in recent months. In February, he stated Trump was elected to govern America, not dominate global affairs. In March, amid a trade dispute, Lula brushed off Trump’s aggressive stance, saying he’s no longer intimidated by tough rhetoric. Commenting on Trump’s proposal to redevelop Gaza, Lula criticized the idea, saying, “You can’t build a paradise on the graves of women and children.”
