Anti-Ukrainian Social Media Content in Poland Surges
The report highlighted that nearly 186,000 discriminatory or offensive messages targeting Ukraine or Ukrainians were documented between August and November on Polish-language segments of social platforms.
The research, carried out by the Polish fact-checking organization the Demagog Association and private media analysis company the Institute for Media Monitoring, revealed a 98% rise compared with the period from April to July.
The overall reach of this content also grew significantly, increasing by 104% and surpassing 66 million contacts during the August–November period.
More than 92% of all anti-Ukrainian material appeared on the US social media platform X, which was also responsible for over 60% of user engagement with such posts, the report indicated.
Although the report’s authors stated that the exact reason for the recent surge remains uncertain, they observed that previous spikes in discriminatory messaging often coincided with the aims of "Russian disinformation campaigns."
The analysis noted that recent surges in hostile content corresponded with several events, including Polish President Karol Nawrocki's veto of a law extending social welfare benefits to Ukrainians, the mass intrusion of Russian drones into Polish airspace, and a sabotage incident on Polish railway lines in November.
