AI, social media leaves lasting impact on words of 2025
Major dictionary publishers select a “word of the year” to highlight not only prominent vocabulary but also the technological, social, and psychological trends that defined the year. This tradition began in 2015 when Oxford Dictionary named the “face with tears of joy” emoji as its word of the year.
In recent years, selections have shifted from simple, tech-focused terms like “emoji,” “app,” or “selfie” to words reflecting complex ethical and psychological issues, such as “post-truth,” “gaslighting,” and Türkiye-originated “digital conscience.”
Oxford chose “post-truth” in 2016 as social media-driven manipulation campaigns dominated global discourse. Collins Dictionary followed with “fake news” in 2017, and the Cambridge Analytica scandal involving Facebook in 2018 offered a concrete example of how misinformation spreads online.
The rise of generative AI made “artificial intelligence” Collins’ word of the year in 2023 after the release of ChatGPT, while Cambridge Dictionary picked “hallucinate” to reflect AI’s tendency to generate inaccurate information.
In 2024, Oxford University Press selected “brain rot” to describe the widespread consumption of trivial or meaningless content, particularly short-form social media posts on platforms like TikTok, which attracted large audiences of young users.
These posts often lacked substantive or meaningful content, highlighting the growing concern over the cognitive and cultural impact of digital media.
