Trump Denounces Racist Clip, Refuses to Apologise

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Friday criticized, yet declined to apologize for, a racist video that briefly appeared on his social media account before being removed. The clip portrayed former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes.

The offensive footage appeared at the end of a longer video shared on Trump’s account that repeated his unsupported claims of voter fraud. In the segment, smiling images of the former president and first lady were superimposed onto ape bodies, echoing long-standing racist stereotypes targeting Black people, while the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” popularized by a Disney animated film, played in the background.

The post targeting the first Black US president surfaced during Black History Month, a period meant to recognize and celebrate the achievements and history of Black Americans.

When questioned by reporters aboard Air Force One about the racist content, Trump said:
"Of course I do,"

However, he rejected calls to issue an apology, arguing that the post was uploaded by a staff member who had not viewed the full video. Trump insisted that he was not at fault and said he did not consider the incident a mistake.

"I looked at the first part, and it was really about voter fraud in the machines, how crooked it is, how disgusting it is. Then I gave it to the people to --generally, they look at the whole thing. But I guess somebody didn't, and they posted, and we took it down," he said.

He further claimed that the controversial ending went unnoticed before publication.
"Certainly, it was a very strong post in terms of voter fraud. Nobody knew that that was at the end. If they would have looked, they would have seen it, and probably they would have had the sense to take it down," he added.

According to reports, the video triggered immediate backlash from figures across the political spectrum after it was shared.
