Greece to Bar Under-15s from Accessing Social Media
Mitsotakis revealed the decision via a social media post, disclosing that it was reached after extensive consultations with both parents and young people — many of whom raised alarms over a troubling cluster of consequences tied to screen dependency, including disrupted sleep, heightened stress levels, and compulsive mobile phone use among children.
"The scientific evidence is clear: when children spend long hours in front of screens, the brain does not rest," the prime minister stated, framing the intervention as "a difficult but necessary measure" that the government felt compelled to pursue in the face of mounting evidence.
Mitsotakis laid out a clear legislative timeline: the regulatory framework underpinning the ban will be introduced during the summer of 2026, with full enforcement kicking in at the dawn of 2027.
The prime minister did not shy away from the political friction the policy may generate, openly acknowledging that younger generations may push back. Addressing the anticipated resistance head-on, he argued that effective governance is not synonymous with popularity, asserting that the government's mandate is to serve the public interest even when doing so proves unpopular. He called on young people to genuinely reflect on what prolonged social media engagement is doing to their mental and physical well-being.
Greece joins a growing number of countries tightening the reins on children's access to digital platforms, as governments worldwide grapple with mounting scientific and societal pressure to shield minors from the documented harms of unchecked social media use.
