Meta Strikes Major Multi-Year Deal with AMD
The agreement, aimed at turbocharging Meta's artificial intelligence infrastructure, centers on AMD's Instinct GPU lineup — the high-performance processors that underpin large-scale modern AI systems.
"Today, we're announcing a multi-year agreement with AMD to power our AI infrastructure with up to 6GW of AMD Instinct GPUs, the silicon computing technology used to support modern AI models," Meta said in an official statement.
The company framed the deal as essential to its broader ambition of developing next-generation AI at a civilizational scale. "To do this, we need massive, scalable compute power that can handle the growing demands of our AI workloads. Our partnership with AMD, which builds on our existing collaboration, will help us meet those needs," it added.
Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will coordinate across chip design, systems architecture, and software development. Initial GPU shipments are slated to begin in the second half of 2026, built on the Helios rack-scale architecture — "a rack system we developed and unveiled in collaboration with AMD at last year's Open Compute Project Global Summit," Meta said.
As part of the arrangement, AMD granted Meta a performance-linked warrant to purchase 160 million shares, equivalent to a 10 percent stake in the chip giant — a move that ties the financial fortunes of both companies to the partnership's success.
Meta also highlighted plans to broaden its hardware ecosystem beyond any single supplier. "By diversifying our partnerships and technology stack, we're building a more resilient and flexible infrastructure. We're combining hardware sourced from a range of partners with our own rapidly advancing Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) silicon program," the company said.
AMD CEO Lisa Su positioned the deal as a watershed moment for her company's standing in the global AI race. "This multi-year, multi-generation collaboration across Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs and rack-scale AI systems aligns our roadmaps to deliver high-performance, energy efficient infrastructure optimized for Meta's workloads, accelerating one of the industry's largest AI deployments and placing AMD at the center of the global AI buildout," she said.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg called the agreement a pivotal move in the company's effort to diversify its computing capabilities. "I expect AMD to be an important partner for many years to come," he added.
